Paitsi ettei pysty nukkumaan!

On aika siirtyä Köpiksen rapsaan.

Bruce Springsteen at Berlin Olympic Stadium, Germany, Sunday June 19th, 2016
or
You can look and you might also touch, but just a little.

Berlin Olympic Stadium was created for 1936 olympic games by architect Albert Speer to represent something which isn't too highly appreciated today. But the building itself is so bold, so massive and from what I had heard, also a good place for music events. When I was in Berlin with my family about 6 years ago, we visited it but just outside, and I told them that I would love to see the inside as well but only when Bruce Springsteen will bee present. And finally, it is now time for another Bruce Euro tour, he is going to be there and so I will be there too!

Excellent local train system, lots to see, nice hotels, cheap food and lots of graffiti, that's Berlin. Guided city tours available on foot, in a bus, on Segway and in a convoy of old Trabants (and we saw these all and then some while having a dinner in the city center). An easy city to travel to and kill time between roll calls for the two days me and my buddies Laukku and Eva spent here before the show on Sunday night. Number 53 on my hand means a guaranteed spot for me somewhere at the sides of front rail.

Show day was fun and easy, probably easier than any show day in pit line has ever been. Weather was super nice, we had plenty of room to sit on the ground, which was quite clean. There were even real toilets and not just port-a-potties, but a long queue (but no queue behind those dense bushes, and luckily two of us three are no real ladies...) We also had enough picnic food and water with us.

Of course the was this normal "stay here, something will happen very soon (and nothing happens for hours)", which was this time very interestingly combined with "you can go, nothing happens for a while - oops, it happens anyway, teleport here immediately!" but everyone was on good mood and kept their places in the pit line. There were numerous other Finns too, and we kept in contact with each others and had fun time together sitting in shadow and talking about music.

We had already seen Graham, Bruce's handsome tattooed security guy on his black bike pedalling around and checking that everything is ok (and we girls tried to take good photos of him, of course). When they started giving out the purple wristbands, Graham was still there and he banded me. Oh, I'm now touched by Graham! Will that predict a good show?

Soundcheck time, now the band is live there unlike earlier today when they were blasting Ties That Bind and Sherry Darling from a tape. Pit line was naturally singing and dancing along. Several tries of Shackled and Drawn, and then several tries of Tunnel of Love! OMG, will we hear that? And wasn't it Bruce on vocals, or was it Nils like some folks said? (Later big boys said Nils, gotta believe them.) Clearly no Patti, anyway.

Finally the gates open. Lots of security guys and even police, but nice and quick check and we could take water indoors quite freely, which is very good as this was a quite warm day. Oh, the stadium is very modern inside, although outside was still original. No running, just quick walking and the short catwalk at the end of the stage on Nils' side is ours! Butts down and here we will stay for the next two hours. We were really let inside this late, that there are only two hours to show time.

There was no proper pit rush, and so we had to get up on our own about half an hour before show time, which was as early as 7 pm. Lighting men climb to the rig, cameramen (oh, nice camera lady Kim is not here any more) get to their places - I sure have missed all this so much, it had been nearly three long years since the Kilkenny shows where I last saw Bruce. And this is the perfect time to notice that both my buddies have lost their ear plugs by now and I had just one extra pair with me, but luckily we got another pair from security.

There they come! There is Bruce! What they will open with, hey this is Adam Raised a Cain, way cool! Then Badlands, what a good and rocking start. During Out in the Street Bruce left his place on the stage and started walking first towards the audience and then to the short catwalk, where we were resting our elbows! Here he is, at a touching distance (I touch his legs and also his guitar, but just a little) and we all show our request signs to him. He pauses for a while to stare at my Jackson Cage sign (photos of Samuel L. Jackson and Nicholas Cage on yellow background) and it was so cool to see his smile getting wider and wider!

Sound was far from perfect when the show started, but it soon got better and by now it is even surprisingly good, although we were so front and so much left from the center. Bruce's voice was also a little hoarse during the very first songs, but got soon better. It was easy to see that his nose was running, but not badly. The folks who had been in Munich show two days earlier had told that Bruce clearly had flu. He looks quite tired and really older than 3 years ago, but I don't want to think about that right now.

After a few more songs Bruce suddenly starts collecting requests, but only from the middle part of crowd. He took at least 4 signs, I think, but I didn't see what they were. First request is anyway Night, which is followed by Saint in the City, big WOW especially for the latter! I really love to hear his oldest published songs.

After Spirit Bruce goes to get yet another request, cute little Candy's Room. It is a little room with some furniture and its outer walls an ceiling are covered with candy. There are naturally the pictures of her heroes on the wall, and now we get to know that some of these heroes are Bruce, Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin. Cool music taste, Candy!

She's the One and Hungry, funny singalongs. You Can Look, something I really wanted to hear as I haven't heard it too often. The River was one of the highlights of this show, a beautiful version, and then 41 Shots! No matter how "static" this setlist is to some others, I haven't heard these live for nearly three long years and everything he decides to play tonight is more than ok to me. I keep staring at Garry especially during 41 Shots, as he has now a bass in his hands which looks like a Gretsch guitar and it sounds wonderful. That must be a Gretsch bass, no? I really haven't before understood how important bass line is in the live versions of The River and in 41. I really must relisten all of Bruce's records and start paying more attention to Garry.

The Promised Land, and Bruce again comes to our catwalk. I had decided to take some photos while he is close enough, but now when he is here, I just can't take my phone out from my pocket, my hands won't obey. This is such a precious moment, and I can't waste even seconds of it to mere photos. Instead I just dance, since, smile and stare at him. And stroke his legs again, too. This is something you just have to live, you can't captivate this into one lousy cell phone shot. Others can take photos, I just ride along and enjoy.

I'm on Fire (well, I feel quite hot now), Because the Night (how I love this), The Rising (so powerful!) and lovely, kind of sad Land of Hope and Dreams (and I start crying.) The band bows, but naturally the show is far from over now. The mighty E Street Band launches now Backstreets' majestic intro, this is wonderful! Born to Run, Born in the USA, and such a funny Seven Nights! I need to dance and I take little more room than someone behind me likes, but hey c'mon, this is rock'n'roll in its finest and we have got to move now, don't we? 10th Ave, Shout and again the band bows. Luckily Bruce just sends them away, takes an acoustic guitar and treats us with a beautiful solo version of Thunder Road.

About 3 hours and 20 minutes, and so that was quite a long show. A small group of us gathers in front of the stage to talk about the show, and we start slowly moving towards exits when most of the others have gone. Good, solid show with excellent setlist for anyone who hadn't seen Bruce and ESB for ages, or ever. We had fun, and that was the most important thing. Now we have to say farewell to each others, as I continue to Copenhagen, where the next show will be in three days, and most of the rest of us travel back to Finland, at least for a while. But first, let's try to find our way back to the hotel through this wild boar infested darkness on the edge of City of Berlin.
